Password Security Best Practices for 2024

Password Security Best Practices

Passwords are often the only thing standing between an attacker and your sensitive data. Despite the rise of biometric authentication, passwords remain a critical component of digital security.

The Problem with "Complex" Passwords

For years, we were told to use passwords like Tr0ub4dour&3. The problem? These are hard for humans to remember, but easy for computers to crack using brute-force or dictionary attacks.

The Solution: Passphrases

A modern best practice is to use passphrases. A passphrase is a sequence of words or text that is long but easy to remember.

Example: correct horse battery staple

Why is this better? Length is often more important than complexity. A 20-character passphrase made of lowercase words can take significantly longer to crack than a 10-character complex password.

Golden Rules of Password Security

  1. Never Reuse Passwords: If one site gets breached, attackers will try that password on every other site you use.
  2. Use a Password Manager: You shouldn't know your passwords (except the master password). Let a password manager like Bitwarden or 1Password generate and store them.
  3. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Even if an attacker gets your password, they still need the second factor (like an authenticator app code) to log in.

Stay safe, and start updating those old passwords!
